We were able to sleep in and made our way to NYU. The original facility that I am used to going to, the Jones Center on Mercer had been torn down – so we met at University Hall on 14th Avenue. This building housed the majority of the athletic department.
Coach Johnson, the newly appointed golf coach, is responsible for both teams, greeted us promptly. We talked with him for over an hour. The Jones Center is getting completely redone – 14 stories – all athletics, state of the art building costing 1 billion dollars! Each sport will have one floor special to their needs. I asked if the pool, for swimming and diving, and water polo (club) also be contained in this structure. The answer was yes. This new facility should be completed by 2019.
Not sure if the reader knows, but NYU is the largest private land owner in Manhattan, second to the State which holds community centres, fire halls, police stations, schools and the like. NYU is famous for TISCH Art school – ranked #1 in the world. TISCH specializes in Theatre, Art – all forms, Film, Photography, Fine art and computer game design to name a few.
My player Jessica, who is currently graduating from high school (2017) will be on the golf team and acquired a spot in TISCH for game design and film. She did have to submit 20 pieces of art, however she had been passionate about the subject since she was young and had the quantities available.
STERN Business School is ranked #5 in the USA. However is you analyze Stern farther and more in depth, in some parts of Business, it is ranked #1 and #3 in specific categories, but overall ranking their ranking is 5. We learned that the Business school brings in special speakers each week and they are open to all NYU students, however they are brought in precisely for Stern. Ashley, my player, currently a freshman, is loving Stern, frequents these special lectures.
NYU differs from other universities because they track each student’s activities and makes a CV for each. NYU has the largest police presence in the USA, has the largest fleet of vans for students to get around on campus, I know last year they told be 23 vans. A quick call and you will be picked up within 2-4 minutes and taken to any building or any dorm.
NYU also has the largest network of companies, 22,000, and they work with in supplying research help, part time work or summer interns to name a few. On a side note, my player Rachel, currently in year 4, at Columbia University located on the upper west side, finished an internship between her sophomore and junior year and she was hired as a full time employee starting in July 2017. She will be working at Wall Street in finance.
I cannot say enough about the newly hired golf Coach Johnson – very accomplished and dedicated. I love this school – the only drawback is some parents think NYC is a distraction to students. Back dedicated smart kids will know their boundaries. Two thumbs up from me – for the Coach, Athletic department and School.
